Archipelago boats

  • Regular traffic to the southern archipelago departs from Saltholmen in western Gothenburg.
  • To the northern archipelago: from the ferry port Varholmen on Hisingen
  • Tourist tours land at Lilla Bommen, next to the Opera House. One such tour goes to the fortress island of Nya Älvsborg.

To the southern archipelago

The best way to travel from Gothenburg Central Station to Saltholmen ferry terminal is to take tram line 11 directly from Drottningtorget to Saltholmen – a journey of approximately 30 minutes.

  • From the central station: travel by tram or bus to Saltholmens brygga. Preferably Tram line 11 or bus line 114 . Timetable (2025) Västtrafik, bus 114 , tram line 11 . The tram runs regularly and the journey takes approximately 30–35 minutes . You can get on at the stop Göteborg Centralstation Drottningtorget .
  • The tram stops at Saltholmens Brygga , where ferries to Gothenburg’s southern archipelago depart. From here you can take boats to islands such as Styrsö, Donsö and Vrångö, Asperö, Brännö, Köpstadsö. < info > < photo > <streetview>

Car and bus

  • Bolt or taxi : Takes about 16 minutes and costs between 230–360 SEK .
  • Car : If you drive yourself, it takes about 13 minutes from Central Station to Saltholmen. The islands in the southern archipelago are car-free. Parking at Saltholmen is limited and mainly reserved for islanders. Alternative: Park at Hinsholmen and walk about 1 km. < route >
  • Bus : . Use Västtrafik’s app to buy a ticket before you board. Västtrafik, bus 114 goes from Brunnsparken to Saltholmen, but the tram is easier.

Tickets and tips

  • Use the Västtrafik app to buy a ticket before you board. A single ticket costs around 35–55 SEK . You can bring a bicycle on the ferry, subject to space availability.

By archipelago boat from Saltholmen

  • Saltholmen ferry terminal is located at the far end of Långedrag, Gothenburg. <info> < photo > < streetview >
  • The easiest way to get here is by tram line 11 from Drottningtorget (Gothenburg Central Station). < route > < timetable >
  • Ferries depart approximately once an hour to the larger islands. During the summer season, the boats run more frequently. Timetables are available from Styrsöbolaget .

Tickets

  • You travel with Västtrafik’s ticketing system . No advance booking is required . Tickets can be purchased: 1) In the Västtrafik To Go app . 2) On board with card payment .

Bicycle and accessibility

  • Bicycles are allowed, subject to space availability, at no extra cost. The boats are wheelchair and stroller accessible .
  • The ticket: Check zones, and if you travel by tram + ferry within the public transport system, the same ticket / system often applies. goteborg.com . Tip: Arrive at the pier well in advance – during high season and weekends there can be a queue for the ferry.

To the northern archipelago

The best way to get from Gothenburg Central Station to the northern archipelago is to take bus 291 from Nils Ericson Terminalen to the ferry terminal in Lilla Varholmen, where you can then take a car ferry to islands such as Hönö, Öckerö or Björkö.

Stena terminals, ferries to Denmark and Germany

From Gothenburg C you reach two ferry terminals on the Göta River. Both have clearly marked entrances, disabled toilets, changing rooms and storage boxes. No cash payment, only cards are accepted. Both terminals can be reached by tram and taxi and to some extent by bus and footpath. Tram map.

  • Pedestrian path : Approximately 400 meters from the stop, well signposted to the terminal.
  • Taxi own car: Available outside the central station, about 5–10 minutes to the terminal. Taxis can be ordered at 031-650000.

From Central Station to Stena Germany Terminal (Kiel ferry)

  • Tram : Line 3 or 9 from Gothenburg C/Nils Ericsonterminalen, get off at Chapmans Torg. From there it is about a 5-minute walk according to the signs. < info > < route > < photo > < streetview >
  • Taxi , own car: About the same distance and speed as to Denmark Terminal.

From Lilla Bommen to the fortress island of Nya Älvsborg


  • Walk / Taxi:  From the central station you can walk about 10-15 minutes south towards Lilla Bommen via Kungsgatan and Kungsportsavenyn or take a taxi which takes about 5 minutes. < info > < route > < video > < streetview >
  • Tram:  Tram line 4 or 5 goes towards Kungsportsplatsen, where you can change to line 9 towards Lilla Bommen, or walk the last part.
  • A ferry ticket including entrance to the fortress costs approximately 295 SEK for adults, 148 SEK for children aged 6–15, and children under 6 travel free when accompanied by an adult.
  • Tickets are purchased via Strömma’s website . Boat traffic is seasonal and usually open during the summer, check current departure times before traveling.
